An EPA WaterSense certified toilet uses 20% less water than the existing federal standard for acceptable water usage from toilets. In recent years, as more people have become more focused on protecting the environment and conserving water, EPA WaterSense toilets have increased in popularity. Since the toilet is one of the biggest water wasters in your home, switching to a WaterSense certified toilet could have a dramatic impact on your overall water usage. In reviewing EPA WaterSense certified toilets, we looked heavily into the price versus the function and performance of the toilet in our recommendations. WaterSense certified toilets tend to cost more and less water could mean weaker performance, so we focused on models where performance isn’t compromised. What is a EPA WaterSense Certified Toilet?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s program called WaterSense aims to help you identify the highest performing water efficient toilets on the market by designating the models that meet its strict standards. Toilets must undergo an objective third-party certification process to verify claims that it meets the WaterSense program’s guidelines.

How Do WaterSense Toilets Work?

WaterSense toilets work in much the same way as traditional toilets, except that changes in the design and use of technology allow it to use less water to flush. This includes the use of pressure-assisted flushers and toilet bowl shape modifications. With first generation WaterSense toilets, there was concern that less water would mean it couldn’t flush properly. However, this isn’t the case as WaterSense toilets meet or exceed national plumbing standards.

Pros and Cons of EPA WaterSense Certified Toilets

EPA WaterSense certified toilets are an excellent way to install a water efficient toilet in your home. With this certification, you can rest assured that the toilet that you choose will waste less water. However, EPA WaterSense certified toilets tend to be more expensive than other toilets. Just remember that less water usage means a lower water utility bill. So while you might pay slightly more to purchase the toilet, you will save money each month when it comes to your water bill.
